- On 1 August 2024, Angela Carini stopped her match against Algeriaβs Imane Khelif after 46 seconds at the Paris Olympics as she felt Khelifβs punches were too intense. Khelif, who failed a gender test in 2023, was allowed to compete by the IOC. Cariniβs decision sparked a big debate on social media, with some supporting her decision and others defending Khelifβs participation in the sport. While talking about the incident, Carini said,
I put an end to the match because after the second blow, after years of experience in the ring and a life of fighting, I felt a strong pain in my nose. “You all saw my nose that started bleeding. I didnβt lose tonight, I just surrendered with maturity. I am a mature woman, the ring is my life.”
The 46 seconds of mayhem that saw Italian fighter Angela Carini, two time world champion, abandon the bout against controversial Algerian boxer Imane Khelif may yet be the killer blow to boxingβs future as an Olympic sport.
